Alaska West

Open from mid-June through first week of September

Alaska West is a remote fixed-base tent lodge. You will sleep in spacious, double occupancy, carpeted, heated guest tents. Meals, always a special treat, take place in a large, heated dining tent. The adjacent lounge tent is a great central gathering spot when the fishing day is done.

You won't need a coat and tie to wear to dinner, nor will you have to worry about tracking mud on the carpet. No one will be offended by your cigar smoke or your drink spilled laughing around the campfire.

Facilities also include heated tents with hot water showers and full bathroms and a drying tent that insures your waders and clothes will be comfortable for the next day's outing. And of course, a central campfire, where everybody gathers to watch the stars and relive the day's triumphs.

At Alaska West you will catch fish till your arms are sore and your back aches (and you'll take home a box of Kanektok treasure to help keep the memories alive). You'll spend quality time with quality people like yourself and won't believe what a special river you are fishing.

Chances are you'll leave camp a tad heavier than when you arrived and if you're like the majority of the anglers that visit Alaska West, you'll count the days until you return.

The Kanektok is a fish factory. All five species of Pacific salmon migrate up these waters, from the giant kings in mid through late June to the acrobatic silvers that arrive in mid-August and remain through mid-September. In between, chum, sockeye and pink salmon make their appearance as well. Trophy rainbow trout are another attraction. Often referred to as Leopard rainbows, Kanektok "bows" are not only beautiful but strong, aggressive leapers that can grow to double digit size. Dolly Varden, Arctic Char and grayling complete the menu, making it clear how great a mix of quantity and variety is available to Alaska West guests.

The lodge' is 5.5 miles from the mouth, an ideal position to sample the great variety available both up and downriver from the camp.

Downriver from camp is the larger water, including long gravel bars where the kings hold, deep snaggy channels that are perfect territory for a big rainbow, calm backwaters that load with silvers and the tidewaters that stack with bright salmon transitioning from the salt into fresh water. Upriver from camp, the river is smaller, part of a network of side channels and tributaries. Hiking these areas looking for rainbows finning in the clear water is a guest favorite. Anglers will also find salmon thickly concentrated in these same waters. Lazy, day-long drifts fishing for whatever species is encountered are very popular as is hitting productive flats often loaded with eager Dolly Varden.

The Arolik River Option:

Through a partnership with the Native Village of Kwinhagak, Alaska West operates daily guided fishing on the Arolik River. Guests stay at the Alaska West camp and commute to the Arolik each day. Some guests choose to book the Arolik River for an entire week of fishing. Others decide to combine fishing days on the Kanektok with a few days the Arolik, making for an incredible week of variety. Daily rates of $100 per angler are charged for this option and availability is limited.

The Arolik is quite clear and is about half the size of the Kanektok. It hosts all five Alaskan salmon species, rainbow trout, dolly varden and grayling. Many guests comment Guests ofen comment there is no more beautiful rainbow than an Arolik rainbow!

To spend a day on the Arolik is to see Alaska as it was 100 years ago.

One of our most popular Alaskan lodge offerings, our clients return year after year. It's the epitome of a well rounded and memorable "Alaskan Experience".
