Rawah Ranch

Rawah is a Colorado gem. Located just three hours from the Denver airport, it's easy to reach. The fishing, though, is far more typical of a property in a more remote location.

The Big Laramie River winds nearly three miles through the ranch property. Perhaps "big" is a misnomer, as the river rarely reaches more than 60' in width. It has all the looks of a spring creek, with long, placid pools, gentle currents, undercut banks and a strong population of insects that form a fertile foundation for growing large trout. The predominantly wild population of rainbows and browns in the Big Laramie are strong and healthy, averaging 14 to 16", with plenty over 18, even 20" to make every day on the water exciting and rewarding. For the dry fly angler, there's good hatches and plenty of chances for surface action. And when surface activity is minimal, drifting a nymph or stripping a streamer can be qauite productive.

In addition to the three miles on the ranch, there are additional miles above the property line that can be easily reach via a short hike. And downriver, on a separate ranch, there's another 5-6 miles under lease that is also available on a daily basis for a small additional rod fee.

The Big Laramie is not the only fishing option, though. There 10-12 lakes within easy reach that offer additional variety and species, including cutthroat, golden and the rare Colorado Greenback trout. While the lakes are often overlooked in favor of the streams, they can offer exceptional fishing along with spectacular scenery.

One of Rawah's additional appeals is their options for non-anglers. With over 800,000 acres of Roosevelt National Forest adjoining the property, there's miles of riding and hiking trails right at hand. The ranch has a full time wrangler and herd of horses on site for those who like to explore on horseback, plus trail guides for both riders and hikers. There's also the ability to combine riding and fishing with day trips and picnic lunches at some of the more remote lakes. No matter if you choose to explore on foot or on horseback, you'll find plenty of beautiful vistas, lush, wildflower filled meadows and wildlife right out the back door.

Rawah understands that time off the water is important as well. From the comfortable cabins to the outstanding meals, they have that covered. Cabins vary from one to multi-bedrooms, each with private bathrooms, electricity and heat. They reflect the rustic traditions of the west yet don't scrimp on creature comforts. The large main lodge has a large lounge area where guests meet, enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail and appetizer, an outside back porch perfect for a mid-day lunch and intimate dining room. Rawah takes great pride in their meals and they are exceptional, from the well prepared entrees to the homemade soups and deserts.

Patrick and Melanie Timmons own and operate Rawah Ranch. The ranch is very professionally run and managed, but without a hint of rigidity. Everything is very relaxed and friendly, you are treated like an honored guest in a private home.

Packages are totally flexible: arrive any day you prefer and stay as many days as your schedule permits. Fishing and non-fishing days can be mixed. Every effort is made to make your visit as personalized as it can be. Daily rates are $625 per person, including meals, accommodations and guided fishing. Other packages are available upon request.

Rawah has everything going for it: great fishing, hospitality and location. We highly recommend it.
