Muskegon River Lodge

Just a four-hour drive from Chicago, The Muskegon River Lodge, in Newaygo, Michigan, is perfect for a memorable fly-fishing adventure. This extraordinary property is set on 12.5 secluded wooded acres, with 400 feet of prime Muskegon River frontage. Right out the door anglers will find some of the Muskegon River's finest steelhead runs and dry fly water.

Muskegon River Lodge's partner, River Quest Charters, provides "catch and release" guide services for steelhead, salmon, trout and smallmouth bass, all on this fertile tail-water fishery. The quality of Muskegon River fly-fishing experience is of the highest caliber. Not only does one fish in beautiful, natural surroundings, but with miles of river to explore, the lodge's jet boats get guests into great fishing opportunities 12 months a year.

The Lodge offers private accommodations for two individuals or two couples with bedrooms in the loft and lower walkout levels. Three full sized beds are also located in the loft bedroom, along with two full sized beds in the walkout bedroom for guests needing group accommodations. The adjoining "Game Room and Lounge" offer guests a large flat-screened television with satellite service, a pool table, a foosball table, and dart boards. Outside the Lounge, a cedar sauna and hot tub beckon you to unwind and relax after your day on the river.

GETTING THERE: The lodge is located approximately 215 miles from Chicago, which makes this an easy destination by car for Chicago based anglers. Air travelers can fly into the Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GFIA) in Grand Rapids, Michigan and reach the lodge in 45 minutes by car.

SPECIES: Chinook Salmon typically start to migrate into the river system from Lake Michigan in mid-August to spawn. The salmon run typically lasts thru November. The steelhead follow the salmon into the river system to gorge on their nutrient rich eggs. Fall steelhead fishing is best from October thru November. Steelhead fishing picks up again in the spring during March, April and May, when they funnel into spawning areas, pair up and reproduce. This time of year provides some of the best sight fishing possibilities for these powerful migratory fish as well as great options for the angler who likes to swing a fly on a spey/switch rod.

The Muskegon River also offers great trout and smallmouth bass fishing during the spring and summer months. For trout, strong hatches of Isonychia, Gray Drake and Caddis occur May thru August, providing the angler plenty of great dry fly action. During the warmer months (July thru September) smallmouth bass fishing can be outstanding, and often overlooked. Combination trout-bass trips are especially popular during this time, adding another dimension to this already diverse fishery

Guides know the river intimately. The entire crew is very professional, patient and eager to both share their knowledge and instruct both beginner and experienced angler alike. Their goal is simple: make each day on the water memorable.

RATES: $135 per person per night (minimum of 2 guests, up to 8) and includes continental breakfast. Guided Float trips are $475 per day (lunch included) for one or two fisherman.
