Alaska West
Open from Jun 13 - Aug 30
Alaska West is a remote fixed-base tent lodge. You will sleep and eat in semi-permanent tents. You won't need a coat and tie to wear to dinner, nor will you have to worry about tracking mud on the carpet. No one will be offended by your cigar smoke or your drink spilled laughing around the campfire.
You will catch fish till your arms are sore and your back aches, and you'll take home a box of Kanektok treasure for your efforts. You'll spend quality time with quality people like yourself and you won't believe what a special river you are fishing.
You will leave camp a little heavier than when you arrived and if you're like the majority of the anglers that visit Alaska West, you will return.
Alaska West operates a fixed-base tent lodge on the banks of the Kanektok River. It is run professionally by staff that is passionate about offering their guest a remarkable fishing experience.
The Kanektok is a fish factory. With runs of all five species of Pacific salmon, rainbow trout, Dolly Varden and grayling, the river provides a great mix of quantity and variety. This location on the river, 5.5 miles from its mouth, puts you in a unique position to sample the variety the river has to offer.
Downriver from camp is the larger water, including the long gravel bars where the kings hold, the deep snaggy channels where the big rainbows lie, the backwaters that load with silvers and the tidewaters full of salmon fresh from the salt. Upriver from camp, the river makes a transition to smaller water, side channels and tributaries. These sections allow hiking up channels for rainbows, targeting salmon in smaller water, making day-long drifts fishing for "anything" and working extremely productive dolly flats.
The Arolik River Option:
Through a partnership with the Native Village of Kwinhagak, Alaska West operates daily guided fishing on the Arolik River. Guests stay at the Alaska West camp and commute to the Arolik each day. Some guests choose to book the Arolik River for an entire week of fishing. Others decide to combine fishing days on the Kanektok and the Arolik, building an incredible week of variety in Western Alaska. Daily rates of $100 per angler are charged for this option and availability is limited.
The Arolik has excellent clarity and is about half the size of the Kanektok. It is home to all five Alaskan salmon species, rainbow trout, dolly varden and grayling. There is no more beautiful rainbow than an Arolik rainbow!
To spend a day on the Arolik is to see Alaska as it was 100 years ago.
